You need to be able to draw.

Most tattoo artists make most of their money doing custom pieces, and most customers always seem to want one bit changed even if they bring in a picture,

Its an over-saturated job market.

If you can't draw, you won't make a very good tattoo artist, and if by some miracle you do manage to get an apprenticeship, thats rather unfair to someone who can draw, and wants the job just as badly.

If you want to be a tattoo artist so badly, learn to draw. Practice every second you can, and take some drawing classes. Life drawing is very helpful.

Otherwise... piercer?

No, tattoo artists are exactly what they're called - artists. And as you may know, artists can actually draw. Several people that get tattoos want the tattoo artist to free draw what they want for them, because they couldn't find a picture to match what they want exactly, which means that you'll have to know how to draw. And tattoos are mostly tracing your own drawing.

No, part of being a tattoo artist is being an ARTIST. If you don't freehand very well then you wouldn't be good at tattoos because most of the time the stencil wears off and you only get the outline from it anyways, so the rest of the piece is up to the artist to create.

tattooing is not the same as tracing.

for example, if you give the tattoo artist a picture they can do the exact same image with just in a few minutes.

but, since you can trace perfectly i suggest you practice your art skills without tracing and maybe then you can becomes a real professional tatto artist.

If you had the choice of getting some picture off a wall that millions of other people have or getting a custom tattoo done by an artist all for the same price, you would be dumb to get the copied one.

Learn to draw. Practice at it. Get a tattoo machines and some ham (still has to have skin) and tattoo the heck out of it. Then make a ham dinner. The ink will not hurt you. Keep doing that until you are good at it. If your still not good at drawing, then take a community college course on it.

Based on your description I would no pay you to tattoo me. Yes, they are mostly tracing, but it's a tough market and you will need every edge you can get.

Well the answer I'm gonna give is yes and no.if u want to be an amazing artist then you should learn how to draw/paint.reason why is becuz when ur tattooing (even though your just going over a stencil)u need to know the strokes, how hard you need to shade, where you need to shade then u need to take in consideration what color of ink ur using n how dark or light it is.BUT if u just want to be a regular dead end tattoo artist then just learn to tattoo, which when it comes down to it is how steady your hand is,how well you stretch the skin when tattooing (which is NEEDED in order to get a very straight crisp clean line),the different kinda strokes you use and last but certainly not least depth..oh yeh and after all that good stuff you have to learn how to be sterile about everything..I would recommend getting a disposable set-up.. saves you alot of time and it makes ur customers feel better.I kno sum artists at my local shop I can actually draw better then most em which is sad

Please stay far, far away from me with a tattoo gun in your hand. Even if applying a tattii was only tracing-try tracing a straight line with a vibrating needle in your hand. Now try it on an unpredictable moving object.

Not a good one.

As a tattoo artist, you should be able to draw an idea that is described to you, improve an image that is given to you, and have enough confidence in your drawing ability to free-hand. Anyone can trace. Artistry requires originality. By definition, tracing is unoriginal.

Many people, including myself, would run in the other direction from an artist who could only trace an image I provided them.
