Facial piercings and the workplace?

Question

I have a job interview next week. I have a monroe and a nostril piercing on the left side. I don't want my piercings to close, but I don't think I should go to the interview with them either. So my question is, Do those clear retainers work? What's your experience with them, or should I bid farewell to my beloved piercings. (I do love them, like they are my children)...sad I know. The I'm going for an interview is CVS, in the Pharmacy.

it would be best to find out if facial piercings are allowed at cvs. just go into one and ask an employee. if you can wear them then i wouldn't worry about taking them out for the interview. or you could take them out and then in the interview ask about them and tell them that you do have piercings and you just wanted to make sure it was okay.



but if they don't allow piercings then you should probably just face the music and let your holes close up. it isn't feasable to take them out every day going back and forth between work. i had to give mine up long ago because of the workplace. oh well.

I currently work at a CVS in Chicago that does allow facial piercings. Hell I have my nose pierced and several of my co-workers have numerous piercings, including the Monroe. The CVS employee handbook, however, prohibits facial piercings.



I would definitely not interview with the studs, but at the same time I think the clear retainers look weird (better than the hole closing but still weird). Go to the job interview and if the Pharmacy manager offers you a job you can ask her what the policy is at that store regarding facial piercings. If the boss says no at least you can keep the hole open by using a retainer.

You cant leave them out. Even if they are long healed the nostril will probably close up by the end of the day and the monroe might be almost. Either way it seems a lot of hassle to risk it and then have trouble.



Stick with retainers. Perhaps go to the interview with conservative but visible jewelry in and explain that you are willing to make them invisible if the job requires it. You may get someone nice who has no problem with them then you dont need to worry about retainers.



Look for Bioflex retainers if you do get them, theyre the easiest to maintain and use. However some jobs wont even accept those clear retainers either and in certiain states it doesnt matter if thats all they dont like. Perhaps an "anonymous" call to find out if they hire people with facial piercings would be in order in advance of the interview.

First of all, how long have you had your piercings? If you've had them longer than four months, their not going to close up on you in under three hours time. It takes about a month to do that. Clear rings and studs are far too shiny as well as brittle. If the manufactures made them from something a lot less shiny and more flexible, then they would be fantastic, yet they aren't made that way. When you go to your interview, ask and the person conducting the interview will be able to tell you all about facial piercing! In some states, this also includes earrings too!

Retainers do work. I had my nose and I've used nose stud retainers in my ears before. If you have had them closer to two years I'd say they are fine for taking out during work but any newer and the holes would be tight. My industrial is a year and a half old, totally healed and all but if I take the bar out for more than a couple hours it's a tight fit to put back in. On the other hand, I have three others in my cartilage that are over two and three years old and I leave them out for long periods of time without putting anything in and they slide right back in beyond getting the collective film off the back from hair products. So I say try retainers. And if you have to take the retainers out because the job doesn't accept those even, take the jewelry to work with you. When you go on break (off the clock is your time) put them back in to keep the holes fresh then remove them again before you go back to work. And when you get back in your car or are officially clocked out for the day put them in asap. Good luck on the interview! I love my piercings as well, it isn't sad ... it's an emotional attatchment, lol. My ear feels naked without the bar going across yet I don't notice it when it's in.

Although I believe that you are entitled to your free choice with regards to tattoos and piercings, they do not make the best impression in a job interview situation.



I doubt if any company can blatantly turn you down for a job due to piercings, unless you are in the health care field; but you are diminishing your chances somewhat.



If you have equal qualifications with other applicants who do not have facial piercings; you may be shuffled to the bottom of the pile. I know several people who have used the clear retainers in similar situations, but if you do so, do not show up for work with your regular studs in.



Some companies actually have body piercing regulations in their dress codes, so you will want to check that out. You can ask your interviewer about if they are allowed or not, if you want to be honest and up front about the situation. I am sure that your interviewer will notice the retainers, and you may as well bring up the topic to him or her.

Retainers, in my opinion hide piercings well, but are still visible. If you wear them for the interview at least the employer can see that you do maintain a certain level of professionalism, but I don't know how CVS runs it stores and what its policies are.



You could try the retainers, but there is no guarantee. If you don't get the job and you have the retainers, you'll want to try a different store or consider taking them out for good.

I have a few facial piercings and I wore them to the interview but always discussed it in the interview that if they were against dress code or would create any sort of problem with gaining employment with them that I would be willing to remove them during my work hours.

If you have had your piercings for awhile (over 1yr) both can be remove and left out for a work day ( 8-10hrs) with no really problems.

I would suggest that your jewellery are plain, and small.

Well I'm not sure if you are applying for a technician or pharmacist job but CVS wants their employees to look professional.

They want good personal hygiene and a professional appearance, they might not say anything to you but might not consider u just because of your appearance (which is sad bc you may be a great candidate for the job)

My bf went for a job interview at a city job and he for got to take out his ear piercing and his (future) boss actually stopped and reminded him that that is not acceptable.

I personally have a tattoo on my ankle but that doesn't show when I'm at work. I would love to get my lip pierced but am afraid that people won't hire me in the future.

Some employers are also old fashioned and just don't accept it.

i have a friend who works in the pharmacy section of a cvs and has over 20 piercings. many of which are on the face and ears and he does not have to take them out while working. however, different CVS stores may have different policies, so you may need to ask when you go for the interview. maybe, wear a retainer [or take the jewelry out right before the interview, and put it back in right after] just for the interview day until you know for sure if it is okay in that store.

Retainers work well but they don't hide the piercing completely. You can cut them down so that they don't stick out anymore than they have to.



You may have problems taking them out everyday for work. My roommate used to have a job where they didn't allow him to wear his eyebrow piercings, which he has had for 5 or 6 years. removing them everyday then putting them back in caused them to get very irritated, red, swollen and lymphing again. Just something to keep in mind



When I go for interviews (for non-piercing jobs), I wear retainers and ask about the policy on piercings. I currently have a job in health care (ambulance) and have no problems with either visible tattoos or piercings. I personally prefer to work in places which allow me to wear my jewelry and won't take a job at a place that doesn't allow it (but then again I have two jobs and can afford to be picky)

if you've had them for years, i would take them out for the interview and then once you get the job (fingers crossed) find out their policy on piercings. most places will let you get away with clear retainers at the very least, a small bandaid to cover it. at cvs, they might even let you just wear the piercing, the checkout girl at my local longs drugs has her nose, monroe, lip,eyebrow, and large gauge earrings so you might not have anything to worry about. until you securely have the job though, i would take them out for the interview, the only thing that would close quickly is the tongue and even that takes at least half a day. if worse came to worse, you could take them out and put them in before and after work but that might increase infection risk and/or irritate them. good luck!

When I started working at my current job I had to take out my nose ring and my tongue ring every day because I am in sales and my boss said it would be offensive to the customers, so I took them out every day for an eight hour shift, Mine were already about five years old and neither one closed, even when I forgot to put them back in for a few days at a time.

usually it's a good idea to nix the piercings if you want to be taken seriously. especially at a pharmacy - you may scare some of the raisin ranchers (aka old people).
