Hey guys, my dad has passed away and im thinking of getting a tattoo my current ideas include, his date of birth and date of death, and maybe a RIP DAD, or im thinking a RIP DAD and a portrait of him, i was thinking back, but i wouldnt see it that often, so any ideas where to get and what to get? he loves his cars, as he was an engineer.

Just the word 'dad' would probably be better, you want to be happy when you see this right? Not sad. Maybe like parts of a car engine as the base, and a scroll with 'dad' going through the middle. If you wanted a portrait for definite, you need yo go somewhere with someone who specialises in portraits so they can get it just right. Get it so thats its faded round the edges, that looks awesome. Then you can write what you wanna write under or above. Think carefully, visit a tattooist thats willing to go through several ideas with you and work with your thoughts through the whole process, theyre the experts! Good luck!

I myself have a tattoo in memory of my mum, but I was never a fan of having names and dates. My tattoo is actually quite simple, but very personal. It is a part of something my mum was very passionate about as well as signifying a lovely memory I shared with her... To anyone else it means absolutely nothing and just looks nice (or not depending who you are)

So from what you said about your dad loving cars I would try and base something around that. Maybe the sign of his favourite make of car, or perhaps an engine....signifying the life of the car as well as the life of your dad. Or maybe even a mechanical heart. Or is there a memory you share, something personal that you did together that brings a smile to your face, is there an image you get from that, something that can be turned into a tattoo?

as for placement, why not over your heart?

I actually have my tattoo on my foot as a reminder that my mum will always walk with me.

im a big fan of bio mechanical tattoos and intricate tattoos. i think theyre super unique and amazing. and you're dad was an engineer. and if you take a look at bio mech tattoos they merge together the organic world with the mechanical world. so pistons instead of bones and wires instead of veins kind of thing. inside the bio mech tattoo you can kind of camouflage his DOB and DOD, so you know it's there for you, but people would really have to look at the tattoo to see it. or, going with the whole bio mech idea you can get his portrait on a piece of metal in the tattoo, like an engraving, with his DOB and DOD.

or you can get a portrait of him with gears and mechanisms around him for a frame.

on a side not i dont really think getting RIP dad or even dad is necessary. you know who it is and that should be good enough. as for placement goes, i think anywhere you choose is fine. :)

Wouldn't advise a portrait unless you're going to a really good tattoo artist. Google portrait tattoos and see how badly some have come out!

How about his family, like getting something that symbolizes all his children or just you if your an only child....or maybe something from his heritage if he is into that. But never get a name of a girlfriend/boyfriend tattooed!!!!!!!!
