Depends on what you want to do with it, lining, shading, or color packing. If you are entering an apprenticeship you might want to look into at least a custom machine, for your needs. Talk to the good people at S&S Custom Irons. Chris makes awesome custom machines for artists, by artists. Take care.

What's a tattoo gun? Never heard of a tattoo gun. I do know what a tattoo machine is, and also know that until you have your apprenticeship, you shouldn't even be messing with a machine. If you get an apprenticeship, your mentor will help you get your equipment. If you're serious about tattooing, you'll do nothing but hurt your chances by scratching with a cheap internet kit. Plus, you'll be breaking the law.
EDIT: Yeah, thanks for the wonderful email! I'm you're so appreciative of my assistance! I'm so glad you're willing to take the advice of a trained tattoo artist, and learn how to do it right. Best wishes when you get you apprenticeship, and have to be retrained to break your bad habits! I know you'll go far!
Signed,
Your Mother.
