why shouldn't teenagers get tattoos?

There are several reasons:

1) your body is far from finished growing, and your image will distort, blur, have the lines blow out, and might not be distinguishable by the time you are grown. Then you would need a cover up tattoo that would be 2 times the size of the original.

2) your brain also has not finished developing, and will not be an adult brain until you are in your early 20's. What this means to you is that your decision making abilities are not fully formed, and that is why teenagers need guidelines from adults, and it is also why they do not understand why they do. Teenagers base their decisions on their peers (who's brains also are not developed), and they misinterpret many things that are emotionally based. Teenagers are not equipped to decipher the human faces expressions in all of the subtle nuances, and this leads to misinterpretations and decisions based on these encounters with others = rebellion based decisions.

The reasons for wanting a tattoo, are often not good, and therefore the images that are chosen are regretted when the person reaches adulthood.

3) it is illegal to tattoo a minor, and anyone who does so is committing a crime. They are also, more than likely exploiting the teen. It can be dangerous for health and wellfare, and some pretty scary things have happened to teens by 'scratchers' doing tattooing in their garages.

4) Teens don't always have the money for a quality tattoo, and will decide to do some very stupid and dangerous things to get one... homemade ideas, and unsanitary conditions.

So, when doing something that is permanent, you should wait and do it right.

So, this is why Be of age and grown and mature. Find a reputable and skilled and licensed tattoo artist. And be able to pay for it, including the tip.

This is serious stuff, not a fad for a teenager, because it is forever.

Most of the time I consider that they consider tattoos seem cool or they rather wish a tattoo for the sake of getting a tattoo. The well stores do ask for ID (even around the pond) the shady ones do not regularly verify or ask. It's unlawful to get tattooed in a store below the age of 18 in North America. But they'll uncover a few one to tattoo them or get their possess computing device and tattoo them selves.

Simply put, because they're permanent and even if you absolutely loove something when your a teenager it doesn't mean you're still going to like it when your 30, 40, 50.

I understand that even a 30, 40 or 50 yr old can make a bad choice as well but teenagers tend to be more impulsive and follow fads more than someone a bit older.

Because most are still growing, physically and emotionally. They might think they want or are ready for a tattoo, but after they've fully matured in their thinking, they'd question theirselves for the reason why they got the tattoo(s) in the first place. Excluding that tats are for life, and they WILL fade in colour.

Well whats the difference between a 17 year old and an 18 year old who is allowed to drink/ smoke/ get tattooed and gamble... I have recently turned 18 and I haven't mentally changed overnight!!

because teenagers usually go through phases and might regret getting a certain tattoo, such as loving a rock band, so they get a tattoo of the band...months later they are sick of that band and now have a permanent tattoo of it.

the way i see it, it depends if the teenager is mature enough

and tattoo artists can't really tell if the teen is mature by just meeting him/her once

so its appropriate that the age limit is 18

Because they don't make the best choices in their teen years. They would regret getting it when they are older. Like some people said, they might like something in their teen years, but then stop liking it later.

Because its not THEIR body, its their parents.

Plus freedom of expression is so old fashioned.
