I would say depending on where you get it on your ribs... anywhere from a 4 to a 7. I got a tattoo on my upper rib/sideboob area and the closer to my breast, I would say 6-7, and on my rib it was a 4-5. A lot of people say it is EXTREMELY painful, but I honestly didn't find it that bad. And it was my first tattoo.

Like hawlee^ said, I had one of my tattoos on my chest area- which people often compare on the pain scale with the rib area.

It was painful after sitting there for 3 hours, but all in all it was bearable. I'd say probably on the 7 area. Of course, everyone has a different pain tolerance. I consider myself a person with high pain tolerance, so a 7 is actually kind of high for me.

Most places will tell you not to take anything before a tattoo session, but I took 2 ibuprofen's before my chest tat session, and I know it helped hundreds. So, if you're really worried about it, don't be afraid to take a few before you go in (just make sure it isn't Aspirin, or anything similar, because it thins the blood and will make you bleed more!)

Hawlee was also right, because when they got to my pec/boobage area, it hurt the worst. That was the worst pain.

Best luck to you!

Eat about an hour before you go. Practice relaxing your body, breathe slow and easy and check your whole body to see if you are tense, lower your shoulders etc. Distract yourself by listening, talking, looking around, thinking about other things. Your main goal is to hold still, to do this you need to relax and breathe. It will hurt with varying intensities at different places, it will only hurt when the needle is down. So, the majority of the time it is more annoying than painful, but when it hurts it can hurt a lot, so relax and breathe and hold still. Then treat it like a baby for 2 - 4 wks enjoy your ink!
