A&D is petroleum based, however it also contain vitamins - good for the tattoo. You should not use petroleum jelly (vaseline) because that is 100% petroleum and will pull out the color. It also tends to smother the tattoo and your tattoo needs to breathe in order to heal properly. So you should not use pure petroleum on your tattoo, but A&D should be okay because it has a small amount of petroleum along with other ingredients. Your best bet is to use A&D for the first 2 days (remember to rub it all the way in) and then switch to non-scented lotion (again, rub it all the way in). The key is to not let your tattoo get dried out, keep it moisturized, but let it breathe.

Even though tattooing ourselves has been around since almost the beginning of man, we still don't know exactly how to heal all of it properly.

We know the basics of infection control, certainly.

However, healing a tattoo a certain way to make it look it's best for the longest period of time, has been trial and error.

Some say don't put anything on it at all, go natural and let your body take care of it. Others will tell you to use this or that, it's the only way to do it.

Wrap it, don't wrap it. Lots of suggestions out there.

My best advice is to listen to your tattooist. They have experience with their work, the type of ink they chose to use, and their customers, and they will suggest what has worked best for them, and what "might" work for you.

Edit...Seems I've only repeated what SCT has said while I was typing, I am going to leave my answer though, because I believe the advice is worth repeating, even at the expense of me looking rather silly.

Every artist has slightly different views to how how aftercare is applied based on there training. Hence people are told slightly different methods. Whats great for healing isnt the best for the ink and vice versa. But most aftercare recomendations from your artists work. So stick to the advice sheet your given.

Because different people are told different things. I know I see many people saying they wrap their tattoo in saran wrap too and I was told that was the best way to get an infection.

I've heard both to use A&D and to not use it. Personally, I've used Lubriderm. It doesn't have petroleum and it doesn't let your body heal fully thats why.
