Hey, I am going to get my third tattoo soon. I am getting this really inspiring quote(well two of my fav quotes combined into one) on my ribs. I really want something around the words though. My initial two ideas were a scroll and the words inside being written with a feather pen or a lanscape backround with the words entangled in. What do you guys think of that? the quote is 22 words. Do you have a good idea of something I could put around the words. thanks!

Personally I don't like scrolls - well, I like the concept, but I've seen dozens of pictures of scroll tattoos and I've never thought they've translated well into a good piece of work. But that's just my opinion, and perhaps all the examples I've seen have been done by crappy artists.

As for the landscape - it's a bit of a vague description, can you elaborate? But sounds like an interesting idea.

It would help to see what you're getting, or is it personal? And how you're getting it written - vertically or horizontally? Fancy script or print font or other? Etc. Personally I quite like lettering tattoos with silhouetted ivy around it or some sort of flourishy art nouveau detail. But depending on what the quote is about, I might be able to think of something more fitting to that specifically!

That's a lovely quote! I love the idea of a sky setting. I don't know... it just seems to fit to me. Possibly a sunset at the bottom, with a pinky orange glow fading up into clear blue, hinted cloud detail and perhaps a flock of birds, with sunrays created with negative space perhaps. That's the image that came into my head when I read the quote. Maybe it's just me being cheesy, but when I look at the bottomless sky it reminds me to live and be free and that humans can create all the issues we want to but we're just a part of nature. Hmm I digress anyway. Good luck finding something perfect!

Whoa, 22 words is a lot to fit on your ribs. Is it vertical or horizontal?

I think the feather pen idea is unique, but I don't know how it would translate into an image that would look good with words inside of it.

Depending on what your quote is about, the scroll idea is nice too. Both are good ideas, I think :)

Bear in mind that unless you want your ink to run together after a few years, you want to get your letters about an inch high. A lot of shops will tattoo you smaller, but I promise you'll regret that. The bigger the letters, the less of a chance the words will run together as your ink ages.

Good luck!

I like your idea of keeping this inspiring quote. Ribs could be a good place if balanced right with size color and font. The total of 22 words could be put in various lines and spaced properly to look good.

As for your desire to include some feather pen or landscape, it could complement well but be aware and don't get swayed or impatient if you don't like anything. Take your time and visualise it. Write your thoughts if you want. This will tremendously help the tattoo artist to get you what you want.

Since this is a source of inspiration for you, i would suggest keeping it plain and simple. What i had in mind is a typewriter font and peacock feather.

Peacock feather is colourful and flamboyant and will balance your plain text. We have all heard the expression, “Proud as a Peacock.” The expression was first used by Chaucer in the 14th century and still works today. Pride and grandeur are the qualities we immediately attribute to the handsome Peacock. But its astonishing beauty -- especially its magnificent plumage -- has gained it a symbolic presence in temples, royal gardens and fanning royalties.

Happy tattooing !

I've seen beautiful scroll tattoos. If you go to a great artist then it should turn out amazing
