I have a butterfly on my lower back, which I got the day after I turned 18. Mostly it's just to look pretty and fun, but I would also say that to me it symbolizes growing up, changing, and becoming independant. It doesn't matter if a tattoo has a meaning like that. Generally butterflies show freedom and regardless of where you put it, it won't change. What matters is what the tattoo means to you, not to anyone else.
