A Butterfly is a sign of freedom no matter where it is on the body.
And for what ever reason you are not trapped anymore may the symbol of the Butterfly keep you strong to go forward and not backwards.

Then that's what it means. Don't let other people tell you what the meaning of it is when you already know what it means to you and you only. That's a beautiful meaning by the way - I have a butterfly on my shoulder for a similar reason - I have evolved.

It means that you have the ballz to get a beautiful piece of art in a highly visible place. I have yet to venture out on my neck or hands, but I may get my wife's lips tattooed there.(lacking said ballz) Good job. My wife has a nautical star on her neck.

I have a butterfly on my lower back, which I got the day after I turned 18. Mostly it's just to look pretty and fun, but I would also say that to me it symbolizes growing up, changing, and becoming independant. Now I'm 20 and soon plan on adding tribal designs and/or flowers to my butterfly. I love my tattoo!

Wow, I would not be calling that person a friend much longer...
It doesn't matter if a tattoo has a meaning like that. Generally butterflies show freedom and regardless of where you put it, it won't change. What matters is what the tattoo means to you, not to anyone else.

it means whatever you want. there is no set rule for ANY tattoo. you have to live with it so it is just what you want it to be. they are probly just jealous of how brave and unique you are.

It means you spent money to have ink injected into your skin in the shape of a butterfly and now you have awakened to the fact that other people may judge you for having done so,

Although for the life of me I cannot figure out why someone would get a tattoo at all . . . . you might find this website relative to your particular tattoo.
Don't know what you were "trapped" by that caused you to get the tattoo, but it appears to me that you are now trapped by the tattoo, though, . . . . always having to offer an explanation about it.
