My artist recommended using a&d ointment for the first two or three days, then switching over to cocoa butter or a cocoa butter stick.
I know that scented lotions can irritate the tattoo, is Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula good?

NO you shouldn't be using any thing with a fragrance or fancy oils in it they can irritate your tattoo. All you need is unscented not died lotion like Lubriderm or Curel.

Don't use the cocoa butter, use the lubriderm. BUT. Make sure the tattoo is completely dry when you put it on. I always make the mistake of putting it on right after I get out of the shower. Last time, it burned SO badly... It was actually excruciating, I had to shower it off again. Just make sure you allow the tattoo to completely dry before you put the lotion on, and it should be fine. Make sure not to use Vaseline, ever. It contains petroleum and is horrible for open wounds.. However, vaseline lotion is something different, and it works well too. Anytype of uncolored, unscented lotion will work just fine.

You shouldn't put anything on it for the first few days, just wash it with antibacterial soap. Then use unscented lotion as needed. nothing fancy.
This info is from the BEST tattoo artists I've ever had, and the tattoos he's given me have healed faster and better than any others I've gotten. Using a&d won't hurt, but this method really does work better.

I always use Bepanthen (it's fantastic) Tattoo goo also works well for me.
Cocoa butter is ok on healed tattoos, but I would be very cautious using it on a fresh tattoo, as it brought me out in huge itchy hives the one time I used it.
