As long as there aren't any chemicals its ok. Just make sure it is pure sea salt. I got some from my piercer, and then when I ran out I bought the kind in a blue and yellow canister, with the little girl on it.... I can't remember the name. But I got it in the food section, with the spices and whatnot. Just normal sea salt. My piercer told me to use a shot glass( I have a lip and nose piercing) and put a pinch of salt in a shot of water. Both piercers told me that, actually. Just put the salt in (make sure whatever you are using is sterile) and swish it around so it dissolves. Make sure to clean it with a soap recommended by your piercer. Don't just use Dial or something. Use what they give you. I use Satin on all of my piercings and tattoos. Only clean it with what they recommend. Call them if you are not sure. I was reading some of the answers and felt the need to edit. DO NOT use alcohol or peroxide, this can be very damaging. Please have the common sense not to put Vasoline on it. Only use the soap they recommend and a sea salt soak.

Anyway you do it works

if you cant put it in a bowl... try finding a smaller one and lying your head sideways against the counter(I do this with my ROOK piercing.... so you can imagine how weird a position it is..)

now I used to just use cotton balls as well

or you could soak a piece of paper towel(to make a hot compress) for the piercing..

now about the irritation...

well perhaps the water is too hot?

maybe you have too much salt in the solution?(pay attention to amount recommended)

BTW when its red i hear that it's helping get the blood flowing..

but swollen...

hmm;s perhaps consult your piercer if this continues

it seems a bit unusual..

seeing as sea salt soaks normally soothe your piercing?

sea salt is the perfect solution! honestly with every piercing ive had (i have 2 in my tongue, industrial and spiderbites) i have always used sea salt soaks and they are a miracle. helped with swelling and helped heal it faster. so defeintly contiue with the soaks sweetie cuz that is the best thing to use on piercings.

my industrial took a good month to heal properly but thats cuz i kept banging on stuff and sleeping on it so i don't blame it taking so long to heal but just hang in there and keep up the salt! yayyy! :-)

You can soak it in whatever is convenient to you. When I got my lip and my nose pierced both piercers actually suggested I use a shot glass. You can put it in anything you want, but make sure that whatever you use is sterile. Sea salt soaks are a wonderful help. A pinch in a shot or so of water can help push all of the junk out of the hole. Be sure to clean it afterwards. That will kill the bacteria left that the salt soak doesn't get. Email me if you have any more questions!

I never soaked my cartilage in sea salt... I didn't know you should... Where did you get yours done? I got mine at Claire's and they just gave me ear care solution and it never got infected or anything... That's odd.

Why don't you try tipping your head to the side, put the glass against it [over your ear], and then bring your head back up? Works for me. But it's okay to use bowl too. If you lie on your side or something and keep your ear in the bowl for 5-10 minutes. I'd stop using that other solution you have. And don't forget to rinse your ear off w/ fresh water when you're done soaking.
