I got my black outline done when I turned 18. Then waiting 2 years and 3 months and got the color finally done. Its now been 5 months since its been done. And at random it gets so itchy I can't even stand it.
Its on my lower back (tramp stamp)
Whats going on? Is this normal?

I have a tattoo on my inner right wrist that is over a year old and that stupid thing still gets itchy now and again. Is it raised? If not, I would just put some Tattoo Goo on it and it should help. If it is raised, you may have some issue going on. I know when one of my tattoos itched and was raised it turned out I was having an allergic reaction to the color red/purple - nothing to freak out about though.
EDIT: Beautiful tattoo!!!! It looks great! I would just keep an eye on it. If you are concerned, I would suggest going to see your tattoo artist and see what they say. The one that I have is 20 years old and when I get sick the entire thing raises, but doesn't hurt. For some reason my body doesn't like red or purple. I don't know what you are using for salve, but Tattoo Goo is excellent and I highly recommend it. Here is a link for you: http://www.tattoogoo.com/TG-101-110-tins.php

Yes and no. My tattoo artist informed me when I asked her that most likely what is occurring is the bodies attempt to reject the substance that was injected into. This also happens in the form of swelling which is what I have. The reactions can be brought on by sun exposure or sunburn, scratching, rough clothing or even stress. I got my first tattoo almost 10 years ago, and I still have occasional swelling and itching. Over time, these reactions will spread out but unfortunately some people always have them. It can also vary with different or no reactions from black inks to colored. So, no it is not normal because it is a form of reaction but yes, it normal because it is very typical of tattoos.

Tattoos Being Done

yes, i agree with you totally. too many people get tattoos done on a whim, without thinking it though, or going to a reputable tattoo artist. i have a dragon tattoo on my left hip. i chose to get it done as i'd been through some rough times, and the dragon to me symbolized my strength to move forwards with my life. i do not regret getting it done at all. however, my parents still don't know that i have it, so that's one down side..... some people never approve of tattoos, no matter how nice they are, or how good a reason u have for getting a tattoo. tattoos are a personal choice. it is entirely up to each individual person as to whether or not they choose to get one. i just wish some people weren't so prejudiced against them.... i've seen some answers on here before from people saying that 'only slappers' get tattoos, or that they make people look trashy, or that they are an offense to god.... it annoys me that people think that they have the right to judge others like that. the world is already full of enough stereotypes.

Well since you said it is raised in some places it probably would be smart to have it checked out by the tattoo artist and maybe even a doctor if it is really bothering you.
But as for random itching of tattoos... I have a large foot piece done in spring 07 and it healed nicely but I did get random bouts of itching that fall. I think it was just scar tissue.

Tattoos should only be itchy when they are healing. Maybe for a month or so after it's completed it should scab, itch and peel. You should go back into your tattoo artist's shop and ask him if it healed correctly. If you picked at the tattoo when it was healing it might have gotten infected or healed incorrectly.
Definitely go get it checked out because it shouldn't be itchy anymore!

I think you need to moisturize it. When a tattoo is dry it does that. I have had mine for 4 months in places its still raised but not itchy when it seems dry I put lotion on it. That's just my person opinion though!!!

You are my hero! I love that you said it should be sacred. I whole heartedly agree with you. I am so sick of questions saying "what tattoo should I get??" because people want tattoos to be cool. Tattoos without meaning are my pet peeve. Oh and I do have a tattoo and it means the world to me.

If its raised it could be scar tissue which would make it itch fo sho. Usually scar tissue happens when the tattooist has gone too deep. I have one little spot of it on my "tramp stamp" too, it has now been about 6 years and it no longer itches. OK maybe every once in a while it dose. I'd try putting lots of lotion on daily. Very nice tat BTW.

It is normal. I got my first tat when i was 18 and the gentleman that did it told me it would get itchy as it began to heal some more. The horrid itch will go away, it just depends on your healing time.
