If you are not at least 18, it is generally illegal to be tattooed. Which usually means a "jail house" tat or going to a very shady tattooist. Both, not a good idea.
This is a permanent mark on your body that should only be done by a licensed professional and a very good artist.

I got my first tattoo on my 18th birthday. I knew exactly what I wanted for as long as I can remember. It is very special and important to me. I would not advise anyone to get a tattoo until they are an adult. When you are a teenager you are still figuring out who you are. I have a friend who went through a "goth" phase as a freshman and got a Manson tattoo, and now she is having it covered because that isn't who she is at all.
If you wait until you really know who you are, and you think long and hard about what you get you will end up with a tattoo to be proud of. Choose something special and meaningful to you. Ask yourself, "Will that pretty butterfly on the flash wall really mean anything to me when I am 40?" If you pick something meaningful to you it is a part of you and you will never regret it. Even more special is something you design yourself. Wait until you are an adult. Your skin will still be there in a few years, and tattoos are hard to remove. Not to mention expensive, painful, and most of the time removal still leaves traces or shadows of the tattoo.
And to the people saying that no one should get tattoos and that people with tattoos are stupid or ugly, just remember that this is your opinion. Just because I have tattoos doesn't mean I think that YOU should get a tattoo and are stupid or ugly without one.

i got 2 tat's the same day using a fake i.d. at the age of 16. It was the dumbest thing i ever did. I really loved them for about a year, (maybe two) but then they got old (kinda like clothing styles or a great pair of shoes does).... now I'm paying $500 a session to have them laser removed (which is SUPER painful) and its gonna take approx. 15 sessions to totally remove them. If you're thinking about getting them, I urge you to wait til your about 21 or 22. You will change a lot as far as your style, what you think looks cool, etc.
I hid mine from my parents but no one else.... They ended up finding out eventually and my dad was sick to his stomach (they didn't tell me til a few years later that they knew). So that isn't the biggest deal... its dealing with them now that I dont like or want them.
Think about when your a parent or grandparent... do you still think your gonna wanna be sporting tats?

I got my first tattoo across my back aged 18, a large memorial piece I designed myself in mark of my late brother. I was so passionate about the reasoning behind the tattoo being done that I showed it off for ages having put lots of thought into it before having it done. I still love it today, 4 years on :] My Mom came along with me and had a similar piece done too on the same day! That was her first tattoo, aged 60 :]
I don't agree with children - that is, aged 14-17 having tattoos done. There is a legal age limit for a reason - in particular for those who's bodies are still growing. This may alter the look of their art later on!

I was 23
and for the record......generally, when a 14-17 year old gets a tattoo, it isn't "art"
or if you have to brouden the term "art" so much so that it includes some of the stuff those kids get, it's at best Crappy Art
sorry, that's not much of an answer to your question

I got mine on my 18th birthday, i told my parents two weeks before and they said nothing, however on the day my mam rang to ask me if i was going ahead with it, i said yes and next thing my dad rang going nuts!! i got it done anyway and when i got home my mam seen it and said she liked it, she was just worried it was going to be big and awful!
However, i do regret that tattoo because it took ages to heal and i dont like it now, i have another one and judging from the two different artists i think my first one was a bit amuter and dodgy!

Don't have a tattoo, don't want a tattoo. If you are around that age and thinking of getting one, you are going down the wrong path. Would you rather be punished just because of a marking you call "art" that you would have forever and there is no meaning to it or would you rather be happy, live your teenage years, and move on with your life? The choice is yours.

well i got my first tat a week after my 18th bday. a large celtic knotwork piece with celtic dragons coming on from both sides of the shoulder. and i absolutely love it. my dad and bro went with me to get this one and thought it was pretty cool. i mean obviously my parents would have preferred i didnt get any but you gotta make your own decisions in life. after the first one, i stopped telling them about my newest ones because they were just going to lecture and i didnt wana hear it. they obviously saw them tho, mainly because it started just by goin down my left bicep, then the forearm, and eventually into an entire sleeve. so they were quite visible. i love all of my tattoos and have no regrets. as for aging, by the time your 65 or 70, who the f*** cares what your tats look like, your already old and wrinkly and gross looking anyway.

No. I have no tattoos. Unless you are a pirate, you shouldn't have one.
