I always wondered this... whether it's an atheist or someone who was merely baptized but doesn't go to church?

Why not ask someone that has a cross and isn't a Christian? Everyone would have their own reason. Crosses aren't just a Christian symbol.

And...merely baptized? Baptism is hardly a small thing. If someone is seriously baptized, then it doesn't make them any less of a Christian if they don't go to church. I don't go to church for quite a few reasons but I am definitely a Christian.

the basic shape of a cross, has since prehistoric times

been employed in almost every culture throughout the

world and all the roughly similar shapes of cross

symbols have wildly different meanings.

the cross variously symbolised health, fertility, life,

immortality, the union of heaven and earth, spirit and

matter, the sun, the stars... it is seen a world centre and

a cosmic axis, the cross represents the human form,

with its four cardinal points it can be mapped to fourfold

systems: the four directions: north, south, east, and west;

the 4 seasons; the four elements; the four winds...

How do you know they aren't religious, have you asked them? I personally take offense to the "merely" baptized comment, I am Catholic, and consider myself to have a very good relationship with God and no I don't go to church on a regular basis.

I don't know any atheist that have gotten a tattoo of a cross. If you know one, then perhaps you should ask them.

Crosses as symbols predate Christianity by the way. They can be used as symbols of the four elements, as the cardinal points, the tree of life, etc.

It really bothers me when people do that, I'm not quite sure. However, I know that if you get a cross tattoo on the inside of your forearm it means that you used to do heroin. That particularly isn't christian.

If it's a celtic cross they could be getting it because they are of celtic decent. You don't have to be religious to admire crosses...
