I really want to become a tattoo artist, but I know there are a lot of hoops to jump through before I get there. I've been told that work experience will get me an apprenticeship a lot easier, but I'm not sure how to go about applying for work experience. Should I bring a portfollio and a resume? or becuase its only work experience will they just expect me?

If you want to get your foot in the door, ask them if they need someone to work the counter. That means answering the phone, running for lunch, booking appointments, cleaning, etc. etc. etc. Tattooing has become mainstream enough that the market has become saturated with people seeking apprenticeships. You'd be better off working the counter if they need you and letting the artists get to know you before you broach the subject of an apprenticeship.

I'd bring a resume, personally. At least it lets them know you were willing to make the effort. Tattoo shop owners are often treated as if they aren't legitimate business people since people have these preconceived notions about folks in the industry. Treating this seriously - as you would treat applying for any other job - will go a long way.

Go into the shop and talk to the artists there. Let them know what you want to do, and take some examples of your work (drawings) with you. I wouldn't worry about as resume so much as a few good examples with your name and contact details on them. Also take some time to research the type of work that the artists in the shop produce; demonstrate a little knowledge of the industry by knowing the styles they might specialize in :)

Definitely bring a portfolio and be prepared to sweep the floors, answer the phones and make coffees.

My friend owns a tattoo shop and he says 99% of people who turn up asking for work experience do one day and never return

Somehow they think they will be making $$$ and starring in Miami Ink or LA ink before doing any dirty work

You have to earn your stripes!
