Most lip piercings are done at 14g with a labret stud or a CBR. Average labret studs are longer to adjust for swelling then switched after 7-14 days when swelling goes down. The CBR, often, does not need changing. The average healing time is anywhere from 3-6 months and during that time, you should not remove the jewelry.

Information about gauges can be found:

well you emailed me asking about where the tat place is and i tried to send a response but i guess your email hasnt been confirmed or something anyway im puttin it on here.

It is called Cool Cats and it is located in Fontana, Ca. so it is probably a little less than an hour from where you're at if you are willing to drive that far. Anyway if you are interested the number is: (909) -820-0187 you may want to call beforehand. I got my nose pierced there in April and everything was cool. Good luck!

If you get a lip piercing get it done with a person that has a license. You should go with a 14 if you do its a bit bigger than a 16

Depends whether you want a labret ring or a CBR in it. Mostly they'll recommend a 14-16 guage for the lip.

Talk to your piercer, they'll know a lot more than a website will.
