HOW MANY TATTOOS DO YOU CURRENTLY HAVE? Five-ish Some are not finished.



WHEN DID YOU FIRST KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE TATTOOED? For about as long as I remember. (^_^)



WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST TATTOO?First was a burning feather. First professional was the Immaculate Heart of Mary to cover it up.

AGE AND WHY YOU GOT IT? fourteen, because I was idiotic, immature, and impatient. Covered up at nineteen (I think)



DID YOU GET ANY TATTOOS ON A WHIM OR WHILE YOU WERE DRUNK/HIGH? The closest that I have gotten to getting a tattoo on a whim was my last one. I designed it one day and got it inked the next. But it is still very very special and holds deep meaning for me.



WAS GETTING TATTOOED A RELIGIOUS OR SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE FOR YOU? I use tattooing as a therapy of sorts. I get tattoos at extreme highs and lows in my life to remind me of how I felt and where I was at the time. I get tattoos to remind me I am alive. So yeah, it can be a spiritual experience.



WAS GETTING TATTOOED A RITE OF PASSAGE FOR YOU? Getting my fingers done was. It was ridiculously painful so I feel I earned it so to speak. It set me apart from a big part of society and cemented the fact that I will never hold a mainstream job.



DO ANY OF YOUR TATTOOS REPRESENT A SPECIFIC TIME, EVENT OR COMMEMORATION? All of them do, yes.



DO YOU FEEL CONNECTED WITH THE TATTOOED COMMUNITY? I do to a certain degree. I'm still really young and not heavily tattooed so I expect a higher feeling of acceptance to come with time. But I definitely do what I can to support the community. http://www.h2oceanmodels.com/mary



DO YOU CONSIDER TATTOOING A LIFESTYLE? When your tattoos are visible and/or meaningful I do. It takes a lot of commitment as tattoos still hold a certain stigma with a decent percentage of the population.



IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TATTOOED PEOPLE AND NON TATTOOED PEOPLE?No. Differences in people lie within their attitude and personality. Not their skin.



ARE YOUR TATTOOS AN EXPRESSION OF WHO YOU ARE? WHY? They are. I am an artist and I design my tattoos and everything in them represents me in some way.



DO YOU THINK TATTOOING IS TRENDY? Tattooing in itself is not trendy. It is people who get tattoos to be cool that make it trendy.



WHY DO YOU THINK SOME PEOPLE NEVER GET TATTOOED? Some people have beliefs against tattoos. Some people do not like the aesthetic of it. Some people do not want to experience the pain. Some would tire easily of seeing the same thing all the time. I even know someone who doesn't get a tattoo because they do not want to get addicted.



WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES YOU DIFFERENT FROM THESE PEOPLE? It certainly wasn't the way I was raised as my father hates tattoos. It's something within me. What that is, I don't know. Nor do I care. I like tattoos and I like myself just fine. (^_^)

23, i got it because i'd wanted it for so long. Plus i was supporting my sister who was also getting a tattoo done as a personal celebration.

Tattoos on a whim...yes. Drunk.high...never.

I suppose a commenmoration yes. My sister passed some very difficult exams so as a celebration we both went and got tattoos to mark the ocassion.

Of course, even though mine is very small so i feel like i've cheated!

No, it's part of a lifestyle.

Yes, some non-tattooed people get the wrong impression of tattooed people when there really is no need to (we're not evil, ruffians, scallys, muggers, chavs etc!) And visa versa, some tattooed people feel their better/stronger/harder than non-tattooeds (which is just stupid)



ARE YOUR TATTOOS AN EXPRESSION OF WHO YOU ARE? WHY?

Yes in a way, It represents a choice that i made at a certain point in my life and it's an expression of a part of me that desired ink.

No, it's been around for centuries, how can it be trendy??

I currently have 6. I wanted to get a tattoo for my 18th birthday for no meaning or purpose at all but to get a tattoo, but thankfully a girl that supposedly was my friend got the exact thing the exact place I was going to get it so I put off getting one. I then realized that I would wait until I found something meaningful. My first tattoo was a memorial for a good friend and for my mother. I had debated on what to do for him for about a year and then when my mom passed I knew I wanted to do something big. Since then I have added 5 more, and not one of them was done while having anything mind altering in my system, and never will be. It was not a rite of passage nor spiritual for me. Some do represent specific times, but others I have gotten because they are beautiful and aesthetically pleasing to me. I am connected to the tattoo community, and in all honesty it's a fun community to be connected to. Once you hit a certain point you do have to take on a different lifestyle for the fact that some friendships will start because a person will talk to you about your tattoos, and some people will avoid you because of them. There is no difference between tattooed and non tattooed people to me. That's kind of like asking if there is a difference between people that have really good work compared to really bad work. We are all individuals and having a tattoo or lack there of doesn't affect one's mind. Some of my tattoos are an expression of me, others are just pretty. I think that tattooing can be trendy. It's strange when I have people try to compare a small little tattoo to any of mine. I had a kid get into it with me about how his tattoo was more "detailed" then mine (mine was still just the outline, I'm awaiting my second session). He then showed me his angel tattoo that had a completely distorted face. I didn't say anything, but that is exactly why I research every artist before I set an appointment, and I don't go to artists that you can walk in to. Some people never find a reason to get one, some people don't look at it as an artform, and some people don't want to get one because they think it's trendy. I think that my tattoos have made me more open minded, but I can't say that it makes me any different. Everyone is individual and I prefer not to stereotype anyone because I don't like to be stereotyped! Good luck with your paper!

ARE YOUR TATTOOS AN EXPRESSION OF WHO YOU ARE? WHY? Yes. I picked my bird from a Japanese painting and had it modified. I picked it because it represented freedom. Someday I'm going to add cherry blossoms (to represent the transience of life) and 2 smaller flying birds, to represent my 2 kids.



DO YOU THINK TATTOOING IS TRENDY? I think certain tattoos are trendy, but I don't think tattooing is; it's just more noticeable because tattoos are more accepted.



WHY DO YOU THINK SOME PEOPLE NEVER GET TATTOOED? They have a low threshold for pain; they think people who get tattoos are "bad" in some way, like they're criminals or trashy women; maybe they can't make up their mind for sure what they want. My husband won't get one now because he says too many people have them.



WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES YOU DIFFERENT FROM THESE PEOPLE? Different than the non-tattooed, you mean? I have a pretty high threshold of pain. I try not to judge people by stereotypes. I have a background in art, so to me a tattoo is just another way to get creative, only by putting your art on yourself instead of canvas. I got one because I wanted to, not because of what anyone else was doing, so I really don't care if it's trendy or not.

currently have? 3 or four depending on who is looking at it. i have two birds that are part of the same piece, but they are separate on my body, some people count them as one, some as two.



when did i first know? gosh, i cant honestly remember. pretty much as soon as i knew what a tattoo was. the earliest i can remember REALLY wanting one was when i saw some dude with a wicked sleeve when i was about ten.



first tattoo was a heartagram on my ankle. i got it when i was 20, and it reminds me of the time i spent in finland where HIM, my favorite band, is from.



no drunk or high tattoos here. i like thinking for at least a year before i get them.



definatly not religious, but it does have a spiritual aspect to it. the tattoo artist has to be really close to you to do it, and its an almost intimate connection.



no, they were not a rite of passage. my right of passage was the time i spent in finland after graduation from highschool.



the two hummingbirds under my collarbones are for my fiances grandmother. i didnt know her long but in the time i did know her we became very close. when she passed away, i got tattoos of her favorite birds, to remember her by and to show his family what she meant to me.



yes, tattooing is a lifestyle. you go into a shop and there is just a vibe you dont get anywhere else. its hard to explain.



i do feel sort of a connection. i like spending time in tattoo shops, getting tattooed, watching others get tattooed, and i like the enviroment. every shop ive ever been in, they immediatly act like im their best friend. at my favorite shop, they know me by name and everyone says hi when i walk in.



i see tattoos as permanent wearable art. i would never get something that wasnt an expression about something i thought or felt



some people dont get tattooed because its against their religion, others just dont like the look of it.



i think im more open minded than people who dont get tattooed. like, the best example i can think of is right now, there is a big thing where a lot of firefighters are being forced to cover up any tattoos they have, and they have to wear more clothes, and it is hindering their performance. some people think thats ok because they shouldnt show tattoos. i personally dont give a damn, if im in a fire, i dont care who comes to save me, tattooed or not.

since i was little sounds crazy but i have been around it my entire life



it is mine and my moms middle name on my thigh i was 20 and i got it for family reasons
